Background

The Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) device is widely applied in wound care to promote wound healing by generating a vacuum when connected to a sealed wound dressing.

Unlike most of the existing larger equipment with canisters, S2Medical AB is dedicated to creating a more user-friendly system that is smaller, quieter, easier to operate, and more efficient. After more than three years' development together with Absorbest AB, ivaQ® is CE-granted and soon to be launched on the market.

As the lead industrial designer on this project, I was actively involved throughout the entire product development process. This began with competitor benchmarking and user research, followed by conceptualization, rapid prototyping, design reviews, and iterative refinements. My responsibilities extended to overseeing the manufacturing of the 0-series and contributing to the preparation of technical documentation for the CE-marking application.

Throughout the process, I collaborated closely with electronic engineers, mechanical engineers from supplier teams, the quality assurance manager, as well as product developers and material engineers from our business partner, Absorbest. End users—primarily patients suffering from chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers or pressure injuries—were engaged throughout the development cycle for iterative usability testing. This ensured that the design effectively addressed their needs while providing a sense of reassurance in their daily lives

The Pump

Improved user experience is the core of the pump's design. Users turn the pump on/off by screwing on/off the battery lid to reduce the risks of misclicking buttons. The use of silicone bushers allows the device to be water-resistant and shower-proof. The innovative combination of the hardware and software successfully prolongs the pump's performance time up to 30 days. The pump is also supplied with an accessory clip which can be put on by the users in any preferred direction using double-sided tape, to provide maximum flexibility.

The green LED will be blinking when the system is functioning normally and the pressure is well-kept.

The yellow LED will be blinking when the battery is low and needs to be replaced.

The red LED will be blinking when the pressure is lost, the user needs to check the system for leakage or replace the absorbent tubing.
